Academic libraries in Missouri are susceptible to natural hazards such as fires, weather hazards, and earthquakes. Emergency preparedness and communication can limit the impacts of these hazards. Determining the level of preparedness was the purpose of this study. The goal was to provide impetus for the MOBIUS library community to begin planning, developing and communicating policies, and to provide training for employees in emergency preparedness. Survey Monkey, an online survey tool, was used to survey the directors of the academic members of the MOBIUS Consortium of libraries. Most of the questions/statements presented were in the form of safety policy statements. The responses were used to evaluate the current state of emergency planning for these issues. Most of the libraries responded positively to using preparedness activities in their libraries for fire and weather hazards and communication procedures, but there is room for improvement. Earthquake preparedness received little attention.
