Acute Manipulation of Training Volume and its Effects on Creatine Kinase Production

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent and nature of a relationship between creatine kinase (CK) levels and the systematic, acute manipulation of training volume in 12 resistance trained males and females, 18-25 years of age. Each individual participated in two training sessions. Work load and training volume were dependent upon group assignment. For the first training session, the protocol was 2 sets of 10 repetitions of each exercise (hig-bar back squat, leg press, hamstring curls, and calf raises) at 65% of 1-RM (repetition max). This protocol was repeated by the control group during their second training session, while the experimental group completed the same exercises for 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 75% of 1-RM. Blood was collected at four time points in relation to each training session (pre-exercise, 24-, 48-, and 72 -hours post-exercise). The two primary findings of the study revealed that lower body resistance training resulted in a significant increase in CK from baseline to peak post-exercise levels, but no significant relationship between training volume manipulation and CK response in resistance trained males and females.
