The Effects of Nursing Core Competency Training on Classified and Work Study Library Personnel Nursing Reference Resource Service
Abstract
This thesis investigated implementing a core competency training method to help nonprofessional library staff provide knowledgeable nursing reference services. Three questions were posed. Would core competency training improve nursing reference resource knowledge? Would the training impact work study and classified library employees differently? Were any tasks on the core competency task list too easy or too hard? Seven library employees from a Midwestern junior college participated in the study. A pre assessment was administered prior to core competency training, and a post assessment was administered after the training. Individual and group responses were reported. All participants demonstrated nursing reference resource knowledge improvement after the core competency training. Classified staff pre and post assessed at a higher level than work study library aides. A core competency task list response frequency chart indicated that there were no tasks that were too easy or too difficult during the training.
