MANIPULATIVE USE IN FIRST GRADE

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of using manipulatives in a first grade classroom to assist with the learning and understanding of addition and subtraction. The students took part in the regular math instruction within the classroom, but manipulatives were introduced and their use was encouraged during work sessions. Students were also introduced to the idea of growth mindset and throughout the course of the year took part in three self-assessing surveys to monitor their personal mindsets.
